Art Basel, one of the- if not the most renowned art fairs in the world and to imagine seeing it in it’s original home Basel, Switzerland. Today Art Basel is shown in Basel, Miami and Hong Kong. To attend Art Basel in Basel has been on my bucket list and I have so many pictures since words cannot begin to explain why…
Art Basel in Basel began in 1970, every year it kicks off the Art Basel fairs and marks the summer reunion of the international art world, hosted by the Swiss city of Basel, which has been a cultural capital for centuries. Just during my time in Basel there was also the Broadway musical the Lion King and many other cultural shows and exhibits currently visiting. Basel is much like Zürich with much to do at anytime and is really the place to go for world class culture. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kanye West alike have been seen at Art Basel in Basel over it’s more flashy younger sibling Art Basel Miami.
In 2002, Art Basel was launched in Miami Beach and Art Basel began in Hong Kong in May 2013.
At Art Basel those in attendance are just as interesting as the art itself, collectors discussing 5 million dollar pieces as if it is an order for dinner. Everyone is a different type of artsy type- we have the girls in all black and the guys in skinny jeans, the art historians and the hardcore artist that looks like they still have paint on them.
There is so much art it will take you 4 full days to see everything.
There is an estimated 3.8 billion dollars worth of art on display this year and is apparently selling fast!
Oh and it gets weird, a good type of weird. The type of weird that good art is suppose to make you feel- a sort of discomfort, a questioning of what you are perceiving. A lot of nakedness, a few vibrators, and one thing I noticed a lot of the 2014-2015 pieces were based on reflection.
There was Julius von Bismark “Egocentric System” which was this…
I had a chance to see work from one of my favorite artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat, he was an American artist who became known for his graffiti work in the Lower East Side of NYC, a high school drop out; he gained fame and Basquiat’s art focused on “suggestive dichotomies”, such as wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experience.
