Expat life has brought fun challenges. As the heat wave continues to surge through Europe stores are running out of fans and my request for ice is becoming less odd. The lake’s have been a lifesaver, they are fun, cool and an easy place to hangout. This weekend we left the hot city and went south to the Lake of Geneva, this lake is shared between Switzerland and France.
The Olympic City is located in a small area of Switzerland, Lausanne. Lausanne is a focus of international sport, hosting the International Olympic Committee deeming Lausanne the “Olympic Capital”. On Saturday we took the almost 3 hour commute from Zurich to celebrate the 4th of July with some friends in the Olympic City. Fully decked out in Americana gear we traveled the entire time from Zurich to Lausanne.
Most people would stare for a bit and then slowly say “Oh, right. Happy 4th of July” others chanted “USA, USA, USA”. Everyone was very nice but there is quite a cultural difference between these two areas as well since Zurich is a lot larger and is in the German part of Switzerland where as Lausanne is smaller and French. Lausanne was lovely and calm great for the 4th.
There were no hotdogs or cheeseburgers but grilled salmon, merguez sausage, steak and instead of apple pie we had french baguette, there was still beer and I made a special concoction of gatorade and rum, added strawberries and blueberries and it was an impressive mix!
